I have been missing storybook towns lately—something in abundance when I was studying abroad two years ago. But calling European towns “storybooks” is such an understatement: they are dense novels of stories that keep you glued to them for hours, each page so engulfing that you want to leisurely soak it in yet turn it quickly to know what will happen next. As you can imagine, it was a welcomed plot twist to find that California also has hidden gems, in between its beach towns people normally associate it with, or between the lines of its predictable storyline.
Okay. I’ll stop with the book puns now. Or maybe I’ll say one more: I enjoyed being a character in one of those storybook cities: a Danish town known as Solvang, CA—that actually is such a fairytale that it even has a Hans Christian Anderson Museum! Everywhere I turned, I was bookended by the provincial architecture characteristic of tiny Danish villages in Denmark.
As I walked through the antique store filled with 19th century grandfather clocks, and feasted on scrumptiously sweet Danish pastries, I wore archaic inspired accouterments. I started with a mid-length suede skirt as my base and contrasted it with a cream-colored turtleneck. To match the chocolate color of the skirt, I wore a matching faux fur vest with black leather lining. The desert hued theme continued with almond knee-high boots tucked under the skirt. As the topper to sweet ensemble, I added an antique cameo brooch. You can shop the look on my LIKEtoKNOW.it account.
