The emergence of peasant finery is definitely a thing. Sounds like a paradox, right? If we’re being purely historical, peasants did not aspire to dress the way they did–they wore what was handy and convenient for daily, pastoral tasks.
But then again, are we really going for the authentic peasant of the past or the Princess Aurora as Briar Rose persona that the little girl in us secretly always wanted to be–the one that picked berries with her woodland creature friends while singing about true love and then running into said dreamy true love because he heard her song from afar and happened to fall for it…but make it fashion?
Wherever the inspiration came from, peasant tops and dresses with puff sleeves have become an aspirational look. And I am here for it, through and through. I am going to go out on a whim here and say late summer brunch looks, where the heat wave in LA appears to be in gradual decline, will be the era of the peasant pinafore for brunch. Here’s how I decided to wear the look to brunch at Commissary yesterday:
I am wearing an off-the-shoulder puffy sleeve blouse that is incredibly adorable on its own, but decided to wear it under my black summer sundress because in truth, I’ve worn this top so many times that I wanted it to look different. It gives the dress a more modest persona–and you guessed it: one of fashion-forward peasantry. I decided to give the outfit a modern feel with some polka dot open-toe heels, cat-eye sunglasses and a Burberry clutch. But I couldn’t resist one more time travel piece: a pair of vintage cameo earrings!
