I have this thing for historic hotels—especially during the Christmas season. Nothing puts me in a more merry mood than meandering through the holly-decked, green-garnered staircases of a hotel built in a different era. It’s as if the magic of that past time does not truly come alive until this time of year.

When I’m home in Northern California the Victorian Palace Hotel is my favorite to behold during this season. Now living in Downtown Los Angeles, The Roaring 20’s accomodations of the Milennium Biltmore and their decorated halls are getting me into the spirit. This is just one of the many ways that I as a vintage soul start off the season. But look no further at these ways to truly have a “Krischic Christmas!”

1. Holidays at Historic Hotels: I think I said it all above!

I love a Mariah Carey Christmas song as much as the next girl, but retro Christmas tunes are what truly activate the holiday magic. So, break out the Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra Christmas Albums. Lord knows I will be singing along to them all during my morning commutes to school to momentarily forget all my final assignments that are due!

3. Nutcracker:

Every year, my family and I watch the Nutcracker ballet together. As mentioned in a previous blog post, The Nutcracker Ballet is “a fantastical performance embedded in Christmas tradition,” so much so that I feel that Christmas hasn’t been truly celebrated until my family goes to see the show.

4. Christmas Movies In Christmas Pajamas:

My college roommates last year all used to tease me for wearing matching pajamas. Call me old fashioned, but nothing says ‘It’s Christmas!’ like red and green plaid PJs…Seriously! But I won’t just fall asleep in such an evening ensemble—I have to watch an uplifting Christmas movie first with a. cup of tea in hand! Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Love Actually
  2. Little Women (1994)
  3. Elf
  4. The Princess Switch (A New Favorite)
  5. Home Alone
  6. And many, many others!

5. Read Christmas Books:

After a feel-good film, I nestle myself in my white duvet, under my French rococo tapestry and enter a wintery-word-wonderland! This year’s ‘Christmasy’ read happens to be “Little Women.” Yes, “Little Women” is not as traditional as “The Christmas Carol,” or “The Night Before Christmas,” but it does begin during the Christmas season, and constantly gives you that warm feeling in your heart while reading about the love and life of four sisters in 19th century America!

What are your favorite Christmas traditions?

Keeping it Krischic,

Kristin Vartan
