This has been a scorching summer–and for some reason ‘business casual’ doesn’t take triple digit heat into account.
As an on-camera journalist, I’m expected to look extra polished on-the-job because I’m so visible. The thing is, wearing a full on pantsuit is out of the question in SoCal during August. I recently moved to Bakersfield to be an on-camera reporter at 23abc, and let me tell ya: I’ve been facing 108 to 110 degree weather daily. It’s not cute to wear a power suit, then find yourself layered in sweat not even minutes into stepping outside (ew, I know).

An equally stylish and close friend of mine, Tyrah Majors produced a fun story about short suits while we were in grad school, and frankly I’ve been seeing the trend pop back up every spring and summer since. The trend was revalidated on the SS20 runways, at shows like Givenchy, Tibi and Jacquemus, according to Harper’s Bazaar. Those designers in particular opted for neutral palettes, which I went for with this brunch look in Malibu last weekend.
This understated business casual look was a solid alternative to a power suit, as the crisp Bermuda shorts are polished while providing ventilation. These white ones from Storets have been my go-to for days I want to look chic while keeping it cool. I paired the bottoms with a fitted white camisole for a monochromatic vibe and a black belt. It’s a classic California combo is Instagram-ready all on its own; If I wanted to simply take the pinstripe black blazer draped on my shoulders off, I’d be good to go!

As far as accessories, hoop earrings are on rotation because they further slim and elongate my ovular face. These ones my grandmother bought me a couple years ago have rhinestones in them, adding some bling to a simple outfit. And if you’ve been following my blog posts all summer, you know how much I love these strappy mules with a snakeskin heel. They are comfortable because of the block heel, but add some extra height. I’ve walked this pier too many times as a Pepperdine student during college formal season to avoid stilettos. Last but certainly not least, I’ve got my matching black face mask in hand, because #COVID19pandemic.

What’s your favorite outfit for staying cool this scorching summer?
Keeping it Krischic,
