How Sacramento’s Tower Bridge Inspired My Outfit

Fashion inspiration can stem from anywhere.

Upon first glance, you may think Etro’s Fall 2023 Ready-to-Wear show at Milan Fashion Week influenced my decision to sport a plaid skirt suit. Or perhaps Burberry’s Fall 2023 Ready-to-Wear runway at London Fashion week. But this animus came from the California capital city’s architecture. Sacramento is eclectically outfitted in Victorian houses and modern skyscrapers. It’s a city veined with trees and beating with culture. And apparently, it’s also Midas touched, as evidenced through the gilded Tower Bridge.

The Tower Bridge is unique in its attributes of the Streamlined Moderne architectural style, according to the California Department of Transportation. Streamlined Moderne is an Arc Deco subcategory without the frills: curvy, long lines, and nautical. With its festooned coloring, this vertical lift bridge puts the “golden” in The Golden State’s capital.

My trench coat and skirt were the colors of the sky that day and the golden rails of the bridge. If the bridge is called tower, I wanted my outfit, complete with a cherry red handbag and a matching lip, to rise above its height (That’s completely possible in these knee-high go-go boots). It’s the overachiever in me, that hums slightly quiet, unless pressed. It’s a mentality I’ve had from one Tower Bridge across the pond, to the one here in the Northern West Coast of California.

What is more inspiring than a bridge? It represents connection and is a vehicle for going the distance. Sometimes that inanimate object can do the thing man, who built the thing, is afraid to do. Rather than driving across the bridge, taking for granted the fleeting moment it gets us from one place to another, we should admire how it keeps us mobile. Maybe when we’re stuck in our lives, we should build a  bridge within ourselves, between the decisions we wrestle with back and forth. Maybe by wearing a skirt suit inspired by The Tower Bridge, I am embodying that concept, like an armor, until it seeps into my heart and my gut. So, as I walk down the pedestrian pathway of this golden beauty in my mod footwear, I imagine constructing that bridge within me, piece, by metal piece. It may take time to build, but one day it will be sturdy enough to cross.
